Ethiopia’s Environmental Initiatives: A Model for Sustainable Development

Addis Ababa, March 14, 2026—Ethiopia is making significant strides in environmental protection, earning praise from Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Anil Kumar Rai. He touted the country’s approach as a noteworthy contribution to global climate action and a potential blueprint for other African nations.

Expanding Green Initiatives

In a recent interview, Ambassador Rai highlighted Ethiopia’s extensive environmental initiatives aimed at combating pollution, fostering sustainable development, and facilitating a transition to a greener economy. The country has introduced measures focused on electric mobility, including restrictions on new combustion-engine vehicles and the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. These efforts are projected to significantly reduce both particulate matter and greenhouse gas emissions from road transport.

The Green Legacy Initiative

Central to Ethiopia’s environmental strategy is the Green Legacy Initiative—a nationwide campaign dedicated to large-scale tree planting. Over recent rainy seasons, billions of seedlings have been planted throughout the country to enhance greenery, restore ecosystems, and bolster climate resilience.

Ambassador Rai noted that the Green Legacy Initiative, combined with corridor development projects, a ban on fuel-powered vehicles, and a prohibition on plastic bags, represents a comprehensive approach toward achieving green growth.

Transformative Urban Development

Rai observed that urban corridor development projects, implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, have notably transformed various Ethiopian cities, including Addis Ababa. He stated, “We observed how the city could be transformed into a top-class urban center with wide roads, cycling tracks, green spaces, walkways, and efficient lighting systems.” These initiatives offer valuable insights for countries striving to modernize urban centers while safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainable development.

Record-Setting Environmental Efforts

The ambassador further described the Green Legacy Initiative as a remarkable environmental movement that has set global records for the number of trees and seedlings planted across successive planting seasons.

Ethiopia’s commitment to curbing carbon emissions is also evident in its measures to ban the import of fuel-powered vehicles. Stricter controls on plastic bags have been put in place to reduce pollution and urban flooding caused by waste.

A Roadmap to Sustainability

In 2024, Ethiopia launched the National Circular Economy Roadmap—a strategy aimed at strengthening sustainable waste management systems and enhancing resource efficiency across essential sectors. Ambassador Rai has praised this roadmap as a crucial step toward mitigating environmental pollution while advancing the country’s waste management practices.
