Ethiopia’s Pioneering Role in Sustainable Water Management
Addis Ababa, February 12, 2026 — Ethiopia has emerged as a leader in sustainable water management within the African continent, according to William Carew, the Head of the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC). He noted that effective leadership and the implementation of appropriate policies are key to this progress.
Leadership and Policy Framework
In an insightful discussion with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Carew emphasized the vital role that Ethiopia plays for the African Union (AU) as a model for governance in water sustainability. He elaborated on the potential for member states to adopt benchmark practices and policies set by Ethiopia, highlighting the necessity for a continental framework that addresses water and sanitation comprehensively.
Sustainable Water and Sanitation Initiatives
The Government of Ethiopia has implemented innovative policies and mechanisms to promote sustainable water use and ensure safe sanitation for its citizens. These initiatives not only serve the domestic population but also act as a reference point for other countries in Africa, underscoring the importance of adopting successful strategies across the continent.
Green Legacy Initiative
Carew specifically lauded the Ethiopian Government for the success of its Green Legacy Initiative, which has seen the planting of over 48 billion tree seedlings since its inception in 2019. This initiative showcases the effectiveness of dedicated leadership and strategic policymaking in combating environmental challenges.
Transitioning from Policy to Action
Carew pointed out that the core objective now is to transition from discussions of policy to their practical implementation. Emphasizing that citizens must benefit from these initiatives, he stated, “It is about having the right leadership, political will, and commitment to translate policies into actionable programs.”
Community Transformation
Carew expressed appreciation for the significant developments occurring in Addis Ababa, stating it inspires hope among citizens. He believes such efforts can transform communities and cities, enhancing living conditions and empowering women and girls to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development across the continent.
AU Summit and Agenda 2063
As the 2026 AU summit approaches, Carew highlighted the theme focused on ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to align with Agenda 2063.
