In response to the tragic landslide in Gofa Zone, South Ethiopia Regional State, which claimed over 257 lives, the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) has declared a three-day national mourning period beginning on July 27, 2024.

The decision, made in accordance with Article 22, Sub-Article 2 of the revised Proclamation No. 654/2001—amended by Proclamation No. 863/2006—reflects the gravity of the disaster and the need for collective grief.

Throughout this mourning period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across Ethiopia, including on Ethiopian ships and at Ethiopian embassies and consulates worldwide. This symbolic gesture is intended to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the devastating landslide.

The HPR has extended its heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the Ethiopian populace, emphasizing the nation’s unity in remembering and mourning the tragic loss of so many lives.
